It’s an end of an era as Nintendo officially announces the closure of the eShop for their older consoles. Gamers will have to say goodbye to buying digital goods for their Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family next year.

We already saw the start of these closures back in May, when credit cards were no longer available for use in purchasing funds for both consoles. On August 29, 2022, Nintendo eShop cards will no longer be possible too. However, the proper official closure of the eShops for the Wii U and 3DS family will happen next year, on March 27th. By then, purchasing and downloading free digital content will no longer be possible.
Although, users who have their Nintendo Account linked can use the shared balance until March 27. Owners of digital titles can still redownload their games and their DLCs, so you’re still safe on that front. Nothing will change for the eShop of the Nintendo Switch.
